Pristine
and Tranquil Schoen Lake
|
Schoen Lake
Park Trail is located in Schoen
Lake Provincial Park. The Nisnak area of Vancouver Island is
dominated by Mount Schoen, with its snowfield and waterfalls.
The falls drain into the southeastern corner of Nisnak Lake, located
to the east of Schoen Lake.
Although not on a distinct trail, the falls can be reached by using
the drainage route as a guide, and by traversing the meadows and
taking advantage of the elk trails.
There are a
few trails in Schoen Lake Provincial Park, including the Nisnak
Lake trail and the Schoen creek Trail. The trail described here
provides access to Schoen Lake Park from the Upper Adam River.
This is not a route for the inexperienced. The curved ridge extending
southeast from Mount Schoen can be climbed by following the steep
gully that points south above the first falls. On the ridge there
is easier snow walking and a fine view, and west from the col is
a more challenging scramble toward the main peaks of Schoen.
Further south, the long ridge extending east from Mount Adam can
be climbed by heading south from Gerald Lake - about one hour to
the ridge.
Drive north
from Campbell River on the
North Island Highway (19) to Keta Lake, about 11 km past the Kelsey
Bay turn-off. Turn left onto Upper Adam River Main road and continue
for about 22 km. A parking lot (unsigned) has been constructed.
A flagged route goes down to the river from here.
Be prepared for wet footing and slippery log crossings. The closest
established camping place is a single spot on the north side of
Nisnak Lake (about a 45 minute backpack trip).
